So today, March 8, is International Women's Day, which is a fantastic and amazing day dedicated to powerful, strong, and brilliant women (yep, that's every single one of us). The celebration was first held in 1909, by the Socialist Party of America, and it took its date of March 8 in 1917, when women were granted suffrage in Soviet Russia. In 1975 it was taken on by the United Nations and now it is an internationally celebrated day. In some countries, women take this day to protest, in others, it celebrates women and everything they do.
The theme of this year's IWD is 'think equal, build smart, innovate for change', promoting gender equality and female empowerment. I love the idea of women supporting women, building each other up and being able to empower others and foster change.
Since it is an important day for women, I have decided that this IWD I want to share my top five most inspiring women, real, fictional, famous or not there are many out there.
5. Rupaul
Rupaul is an inspiration to me. I know, I know, she's not technically a woman, but whatever. She overcame so many obstacles so that people today can be who they are. She allowed people to be the truest version of themselves, no matter what the world thinks. Her best quote and catchphrase is "if you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?", which I'm sure resonates so much with so many. She inspires people to self-love, the only way to achieve is to be confident in yourself and be who you want to be, and the rest will follow. This si such an important message for everyone, not just women, and this has gone lengths to inspire trans women, cis women, fellow drag queens, practically everyone. Rupaul is an inspiration to me and to everyone else who listens to her, so that's why she is on my list.
4. Claire Fraser
Claire Fraser is the protagonist of the series Outlander, and she inspires me because she is always taking risks, and she almost never thinks about herself. She is incredibly passionate, supportive, and selfless. She left the love of her life to go back to her own time to raise her daughter well. She found herself in a bad situation and decided to use it ti the advantage of history. She did what nobody thought possible and attended Harvard Medical School in the 1950s, an incredible feat for a woman. She didn't care what anyone else thought, she just did what she thought was best and made history, quite literally. She was a surgeon in the 18th century, a very outspoken wife and a political figure in her own right. She is inspiring because of her forward thinking ideas, bringing 1960s views into the 1760s to try and improve the world. I love her bravery and her passion, she supports other women even when they don't deserve it and she literally gives her all to see her daughter, her family, and her friends in the best place they can be. She has inspired me for as long as I have seen and read about her, and I believe she is an iconic female character.
3. My girlfriends

Cliché I know, but I could not live without my girls. They inspire me to be unapologetically me, just by being unapologetically themselves. I tell them everything and they support me in everything I do. Whatever I tell them, they are enthusiastic, they are sympathetic, they are supportive. I manage to stay friends with them through thick and thin; I've known my best friend for about eleven years now and I wouldn't change her for the world, no matter how crazy she is. We're girls supporting girls, we never have drama and we never would betray each other. We're the sort of friends who insult each other out of love, and I love them with all of my heart. I've never had such beautiful and amazing girls surrounding me and I appreciate them so much. Plus we always have tons of fun together! Love you girls xxx
2. Rosa Diaz
Another fictional gal I know, but Rosa Diaz is a goddess. She is a total badass, but deep down she is a big old softie. Her season five arc was especially inspiring, when she came out to the squad as bisexual and showed people everywhere how good it feels to be your true self. This storyline allowed the show to explore how to react to, how to support, and how to treat your LGBTQ friends, and I love it. It's explored in a comedic way, which makes it easier to understand too. I also love Rosa because she knows how to take care of herself. She is adept in all kinds of self-defence and fighting, she owns a hell of a lot of weapons, rides a bike, and is incredibly scary, while still openly admitting that her favourite director is Nancy Meyers and that she went to ballet school. She is strong, independent, and just generally badass, and she inspires me daily, as does the actress, Stephanie Beatriz, who is hella cool and hella feminist.
1. My mum
Another cliché answer, I'm aware, but I can't lie. She has inspired me my whole life. She is endlessly supportive, incredibly kind and unbelievably perfect, even if she doesn't think so herself. I love being able to talk to her about anything and knowing that I won't get judged but supported. She takes me to do things, spoils me and can always make me feel better. I know that I am unconditionally loved by her and I'm reminded of that every day. I don't always appreciate her as much as I should, but today is the day to remedy that. She is strong, brave, beautiful and mad inspiring, and has been as long as I can remember. I love you mumma, never change xxx
These are the five most inspiring females I can think of, but I have to give honorable shoutouts to the ladies of Marvel, both real and fictional: Tessa Thompson, Evangeline Lilly, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Hayley Atwell and especially Brie Larson, as well as the characters they play. Also requiring mention are all the historical women who have allowed us to be where we are today, icons like Emiline Pankhurst, Rosa Parks, Simone de Beauvoir, Michelle Obama; women who gave everything they had to get women the equality and the rights they deserve. And, don't forget:
So, Happy International Women's Day! Give a woman you admire some support and recognition today, and every other day of your life, because it's not like we're only around on March 8.
